View Full Version : Not as easy as Sandy sez it is
MtMike 03-29-2005, 05:19 PM Thanks for the pattern Sandy -- I really like this wraparound-butterfly pattern :)
But adding the inlay ---- a little planning and patience is required ;) (and of course I'm long on both !)
I just edited the pictures to show some much better ones taken by Dave Kelly, the maker of this wonderful knife (he has more in the Display Case).

Sandy Morrissey 03-29-2005, 09:42 PM Mike, I am looking at a couple of red x's---no picture! ---Sandy---
rhrocker 03-29-2005, 10:05 PM A great sheath idea guys! Plus, I recognize the Dirty Bird that's housed inside of it!
Sandy Morrissey 03-29-2005, 10:13 PM Eureka! I now have 20/20 vision of a very nice looking sheath! Is that Emu in the inlay? ---Sandy---
MtMike 03-29-2005, 10:31 PM Sandy -- yes, that's the portion of the emu's leg just above the large knobby plates. The bigger plates are just a little too large for this sheath, but there's plenty of "character" in this section of the leg.
So much to learn -- anytime I try a new technique I gain more respect for those who came before us (well, maybe not before Sandy :D ) For instance, on this one I learned that it would have been much easier to have finished the basic sheath, all except the stitching, before I added the inlay layers. But because I glued the inlay and frame first, getting the edges finished right was a lot more trouble than it could have been.
I guess that's why they don't call it bowling :)
Robert -- all I can say is -- this knife is so much sweeter than it looks in the pictures !!!
Mike
Dave Kelly 03-29-2005, 11:57 PM Great looking sheath Mike!!! I can't wait to see it in person. I don't know Robert, after seeing this beautiful new suit I might not be able to part with it. :D
Mike,
Very nice indeed.

MtMike 03-30-2005, 10:50 PM Robert my friend, they're on their way back to Dave for inpsection -- you'd better hope he doesn't decide he really needs a side knife for the shop :D
Mike
DC KNIVES 03-30-2005, 11:40 PM Got in late on this one.Looking good my friend. And yes it is easier to have most everthing done prior to the glue up and stitching,A little time prepping the parts here saves a ton on the final with inlays. I wasn't sure I liked that pattern when I first tried it but after doing quite a few and seeing my customers reactions and the way it solves alot of retention issues on certain knives, I really am becoming quite fond of it.I should have known if Sandy used it it would be good.Dave :101 :101 :D
Ice Tigre 03-31-2005, 03:43 AM Hey Nice!
I had wondered how that knife would be housed, its such a great piece- even more so with the sheath!
Where might I get a copy of this pattern? It looks like it would be nice for a little "bird and trout" hunter I'm planning.

It never ceases to amaze me- the never ending kindness of people you meet in comunities like this one. The amount of knoledge you guys share is stagering. I only hope that someday I could know enough about something to be able to "return the favor" -so to speak.
Thanks again Sandy!

MtMike 03-31-2005, 06:55 PM Gary -- a couple of things to remember when using this pattern. First, the stitching of the belt loop, he portion that runs up to the spine of the bade, has to be done before you close it up! And when you lay out the pattern, make sure you leave enough length in the fold-over snap portion -- remember it has to go over the thick part of the handle.
Love to see your work after you've been "Sandy-ized" :D
Dave -- right you are buddy -- there are some knife shapes that just work really well in this style sheath. I've never really liked standard retainer straps -- too prone to being cut by the blade -- but the width of the wraparound portion keeps the guard on the leather long enough to clear the blade when drawing. Very nice design :)
