I have several large diameter saw blades. 5' and 6' diam. I cut a piece and tried to harden it. Quenched in 140 degree oil. All I could get was low to mid 50's Rc. They have carbide teeth. The first saw blade I ever obtained I sent a piece to a lab for chemical analysis and it was L-6 and when hardened it was 63 Rc out of quench. I have not had these later blades tested yet but since I can not harden them I was hoping someone might know what they may be made of. I would like to use them in a mix with 1095.

Thanks for any info.

From my experiance, blades with carbide teeth are usually a mild steel. Or more than likely, whatever was cheapest for them to obtain. The quality of the blade being in the carbide teeth, not the blade itself which is just a "holder" for them. Might work for a contrasting color, but I wouldnt count on them giving anything to the mix as far as cutting ability.

God Bless
