hamerdownnow,
i appreciate knives that show a bit of history on them. that's a nice bunch of barlows you have. i went through your slideshow and the knife that really hooked me was the searles bowie. what a knife!
thanks,
fischer

What a knife is right! One of the very few "bowies" that have a direct connection to the Bowies. Daniel Searles, being a surgical cutler seems to have captured the essence of a knife designed for a singular purpose. Wicked, sleek and sturdy, one can just picture it stabbing and slashing this way and that. There is no doubt that is was designed as a sidearm.

hammerdownnow,
thanks for the bit of history. now i need to do a search on daniel searles. the knife is, as you say, wicked, sleek and sturdy - not to mention the amazing craftsmanship it displays. a superb design. the man must have been a master at his trade. a reproduction of this knife would be a worthy project, although i doubt i could match the original. i assume you own it - lucky man.
thanks again!

No, I do not own it. It is a picure from 'The Antique Bowie Book'. I have several pics of reproductions and there must be hundreds out there. One I saw recently is a Buster Warenski miniature on ebay.http://i18.ebayimg.com/01/i/01/bf/3c/19_1_b.JPG ebay item(clickhere) (http://cgi.aol.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=43334&item=6512867593&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW)
