i got the double barrel shotgun bug - mainly side by side hammer guns with damascus barrels . just found out my cowboy sxs had damascus barrels under the browning . i sanded it down , but can't seem to bring out the damascus pattern the way i can with my knives . i'm assumeing it's because they're iron and steel , not hardend high carbon steel . any ideas on what to do ? ferric cloride doesn't seem to do much . thanks for any help . paul

Check the bowie out on my web page.It was cleaned several times and sanded to 600 grit. Then etched with ferric chloride at a slow rate.$to 1 ratio. www.washburnknives.com

The more you dilute Ferric chloride the better it works on damascus some use to mix 50 x50 some like Robert 10 x1 my mix is one part acid 50 parts water if not more its fast to see and slow to burn if your etch is pitted its to strong the water will cause it to work better on steel so i recommend you dilute the etch more , now test this on a scrap i think you will be surprised as to how it cuts -----clean and crisp

Paul be sure that you get barrel to at least 400 grit
then sand high spots re etch sand again this well help show pattern in barrel .
what pattern do you have in your gun barrel?

thanks for the thoughts - i did an old remington with just bearch wood caseys " brass black " - came out fine , but was looking for a brown finish this time .
chuck , thanks for the web site , but i already go there - think i'll get the back issuse of DGJ where dr. gaddy wrote an article on doing damascus barrels . gunsmiths do it a bit different than us bladesmiths - think it's because of the material . i've read where dr. gaddy uses a etch and a browning solution . i'm trying to learn something new - thanks again for all your thoughts - paul
