View Full Version : Eggerling patterns
Bill Vining 12-31-2004, 09:03 AM Bob Eggerling makes some incredible damascus. My only problem is ordering it. I wish I knew the names of the patterns he sold. It would make it so much easier. I've tried looking through galleries all over the web at some of his damascus but 99% of the descriptions just say Eggerling mosaic damascus. It's difficult at best to match patterns with their names.
Does anyone know where I can find some photos and descriptions of his various patterns? ####, I'd even be willing to create and host a gallery of his patterns.
Thanks
Bill
Don Cowles 12-31-2004, 12:41 PM Bill, his table is next to mine each year at the Blade Show. He dosn't do computers, but says if you call him and describe what you want, you can work it out. He will send it for your approval- if it's not what you are looking for, you can try again. His number is (610) 682-6836. Hope this helps.
Bill Vining 01-01-2005, 09:00 AM Thanks for the number Don. My problem is that he has so many patterns, I don't know which ones I like best.
I actually started up a little Eggerling Damascus gallery with dozen or so of his patterns so I can attempt to keep track of them.

titaniumdoctor 01-01-2005, 04:17 PM I know Texas knifemakers carrys a few of his patterns. five or six I think, and they have the names of those patterns in the catalog.
chrisinbeav 01-02-2005, 04:44 PM Another option is Mark's Forge...! That's were I bought mine.

Osprey Guy 01-07-2005, 01:36 AM Hey Bill-
Identifying Robert's patterns?....Funny you should ask...Help is on the way!
As many of you know I'm co-authoring a new knife book with David Darom, "100 Custom Knives in the Making".... This book is following David's first two magnificent knife books (The 2nd book, "Art and Design in Modern Custom Fixed-Blade Knives", is being released at the NY ECCKS show in March).
For the 3rd book, which will have more of a focus on what goes into the making of a custom knife, Bob Eggerling will in fact be taking a two-page spread! Over the course of 16 photos he will offer a very nice glimpse into how he makes a billet of his mosaic damascus.
But in addition (this is the "help" part)...there will be a page(s) in the front section of the book where for the first time, rows and rows of photos of Bob's patterns will be shown, and identified. In fact I'm really looking forward to spending the day with Bob up at his place in the next week or so,...and when I leave at the end of the day I will come away with a box-full of his various bolster samples. I'll be handing them off to David (Darom) at the ECCKS Show, so that he can take them to be beautifully photographed in a studio environment.
Although we call it "100 custom knives"...there will also be a number of "non-knifemakers" taking 2-page spreads as well... In addition to Robert Eggerling, our very own Ron Nott will have a spread, Linda Karst Stone and Gaetan Beauchamp are both taking two-page spreads demonstrating their scrim work (Gaetan is also taking a spread to demonstrate how he makes one of his fabulous knives), and there will be many, many others. Sounds pretty cool , eh? ;)
We have quite a few knifemakers already on board, ranging from the famous to the "not yet" famous and are hoping to have the rest pinned down over the next 6-8 weeks. Happily, we've got more than a few of our talented forum members (and friends) signed on to take spreads in the book.
I'm especially thrilled that a few of my personal favorite makers have come on board in the past week,...including a couple of guys who both happen to do some of the finest carving and filework to be found anywhere (and you know how I feel about great filework). Not too long ago, one of them had a breathtakingly intricate knife gracing the covers of Blade...hint, hint.
Well, enough of that for now...I'll keep you all posted as things develop.

Colby 01-11-2005, 12:33 PM Dennis,
For the book is there any chance of showing the damascus in it's bar form then, what it looks like if it were beveled, like on the blade. I've noticed when looking at Damascus it's hard to track down what they will look like when made into blades. Rod's stuff looks great I have some I havn't worked with yet and it would be great to see what it looks like without spending all kinds on time on google. Just a thought/observation.
Osprey Guy 01-12-2005, 02:44 AM Point well taken...(I'm going through that right now with a blade made with a raindrop pattern damascus...an 8" hollow grind can really effect the pattern!).
Unfortunately the couple of pages devoted to damascus don't really allow for that sort of specific coverage on damascus. Sounds like what we need is an entire book devoted only to damascus... blades, bolsters, etched, blued,...the whole nine yards. ;)
Of course, the book will be filled with nearly three hundred pages of makers showing photos of their knives (approx. 16 photos each), from the begining to the end product...many of which will of course be damascus. Until we've finished signing up those makers who are interested (hopefully we'll have the rest of the applications in hand long before the deadline, which is prior to the NY ECCKS show in March), and received all of their photos (they've got until November), we won't know exactly how many will be using damascus.

razorhunter 03-03-2005, 05:27 PM Any update on this fellas? I'm dying to see some literature on Eggerlings Damascus. I just went through the same ordeal today myself.
Wanted to see the many patterns that are available, but had to settle for one of the few patterns that were shown on the Sheffield site, and Texas Knife Supply site...
