Finished my treadle hammer, now to make tooling. Followed the Clay Spencer plans sold through Norm Larsen Books. Total cost was about $275 as I purchased all new steel.

JLoose 04-02-2001, 08:58 AM Hey BlacksmithRick, The treadle hammer is a nice tool- I'm doing all of my damascus on mine and Dang is my leg big! It is great for drawing out tangs and I also use it for drawing out mokume and non-ferrous metals. Make sure it is *solid* if you are going to draw out damascus billets and use the *momentum* of the hammer rather than using force on the treadle... let up on the treadle just before it hits and you won't break yours like I broke mine... I'm hoping to have a tutorial here on the CKD on "...The treadle hammer as a damascus tool," in the next week or two, and also welcome any advice on the subject you or anyone else has. There's a pic of mine on my web-site in the "Studio," section and I'll also have close-ups of tooling etc. sometime this week. Have fun! -Jonathan Loose www.jloose.com (http://www.jloose.com) | |
