Are there any good stainless steels that can be forged deciently and can be forge HTed more like carbon steels and low alloys? Something where long soak times at specific temps and special equipment isn't needed.

Greg Covington 08-04-2004, 02:58 AM 440C....kinda...sorta Forge at high heat.....bring to critical and quench in oil...try tempering at 350F You can also give it a freeze in dry ice/acetone in between the hardening and temper. Kinda...sorta :o hammerdownnow 08-04-2004, 03:33 AM Not you Andy, say it isn't so brother!!!!!! AwP 08-04-2004, 12:16 PM Not for all the time Roc, but some people I might give a knife to as a gift (like my folks) really have no buisness even looking at carbon steel.:lol hammerdownnow 08-06-2004, 04:22 AM Education, care and feeding instruction. This is the way to deal with the uninitiated. You go getting fancy on us and we will have to change your name to "NT Expells air suddenly primate"Petkus. or somethin' hoyty toyty like that. AwP 08-06-2004, 11:26 AM Some people, like my folks, are uneducatable. I don't live in town to observe and scold them, so I wouldn't know they ruined it until long after it turned into a little rust stain in the dishwasher.;) Cliff Krug 08-06-2004, 04:10 PM I knew a smith / maker in the Scranton P.A. area that forged & oil quenched ats 34 . His name was Eric Stroyhan . I dont know how he did it ,he made a #### good knife. hammerdownnow 08-07-2004, 10:00 AM You know I'm just kidding Andy. Keep us informed on what you are doing. Ed Caffery knows some things about forging stainless. You might try giving him a holler. | |
