What is up with UPS!!! I order some very much needed supplies from Jantz. Normally 3 days four tops to deliver. It has now been 7 days NOT including the weekend!!!

This isn't the first time either! Everything I have shipped or recieved via UPS has been taking longer and longer to ship!!! Makes me want to scream!!!

U.S. Postal Service here I come!

There now I feel better. Back to handle fitting.:) :)

Yeah,

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp I can relate- I *always* order UPS two-day delivery. The ground takes three or four extra days to get here almost every time- it can add up to a week extra if you hit it on a Thursday or Friday. I dunno, I ain't *that* backwoods...

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Of course, the Post Office seems to have lost a recent shipment of mine as well... and if you think you can track Postal Priority Insured with that little number on the receipt, well, guess what? They don't post anything until it *gets delivered* which seems to indicate that things they fail to deliver are completely unaccounted for!

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp I had to tell my customer that we have to wait a month before I can even file a claim and then I will make him a new knife- *hoping* that the USPS will honor my claim.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Pay the extra 40 cents to get the #### delivery confirmation, guys... I almost always do and this time I forgot...

I was talking to my brother this weekend and he has lost $2700 worth of guns with UPS so far THIS YEAR!!!!!

He just got the insurance to settle up. Meanwhile he has to take care of customers out of pocket!

Something is bad wrong there!!

Doug I use the Post Office, yes that sounds scary, but I have yet to lose anything, and always arrives when expected or even earlier. I was burned by UPS and FedEx once all it took for me.

Hey Guys. UPS lost 13 of my knives about four months ago. The woman I spoke with told me "Look, you did not spend the thirty five cents for the insurance, so it is not our problem". I was told by a driver that the people you get when you dial the 1-800 number are telemarketers. If anybody reading this is a big wig with UPS and would like her name,e-mail me and I will give it to you. She would work for me about 2 minutes. During this ordeal I learned some things that might interest some of you. My UPS driver told me if I shipped a Marvel Comic from the 60's worth $1000.(on any market), and it had the orginal price sticker on it of ten cents, and I had it INSURED for $1000. and they lost it, UPS would pay me ten cents for the package. How this is not fraud I do not know. He said it is in the fine print of the contract, UPS does not insure "collectables". I was paid $100. for the knife blades they lost. He said once a year UPS will sell all packages that were "lost" to a guy to auction off. If any of you ever see me shipping anything UPS, go directley to your TV and turn on the Weather Channel and see if in fact hell has frozen over. That is the only time it will happen. Even if a customer wants a knife shipped UPS< I will not do it. I don't see how they stay in business. Other than that, I don't have a problem with them!!!!!!!;smokin

Guys, I have shared your frustration over this sort of "not our job" mentality, and have found a solution.

This won't always get your customer his knife, but it *will* get you your money.

I have a policy for [b]collectibles</> that costs me less than $120/year, for values up to $10,000. Covers shipping by any means, shows, checked baggage, shop burglary, the works.

Although it doesn't change the irresponsibility and indifference of the shipping companies, it does protect me.

For more information/details, you can contact:

I agree with Don on this one. Get yourself an insurance policy to cover you for everything you ship. You may not need Don's collectible policy (though it may still be the best deal).
I don't know what it's called over in the USA but here it would be a 'Goods in Transit' policy and might even be on the basis that you declare an estimated value of shipments to start with and then the premium is adjusted depending on actual shipments in the year. These poilicies can be used by anyone from someone shipping a couple of dozen items a year to someone shipping thousands.

By the way, I also hate UPS. They deliver knives to me slower than the combined efforts of USPS and the Royal Mail.

Well ups just lost my business too, I bought an anvil from Ron (Little Hen Knives) and thought they would ship it since they had their own customs broker, but NOOOOOOO! the driver tells the guy at the freight office that they won't ship it cause it will tear up their conveyers, this after I have told 3 different people that it is on a pallet. Bye Bye UPS!!!!

For what its worth, I used UPS for about 8 years and shipped 20 to 30 packages each week only lost one package and it was eventually found and returned. Things started to change and I switched to the US postal service. I have lost one package in the past year and it was 10 pair of sambar stag handles--value $250.00 Insurance would have cost $4.00 so I didn't buy it. I was told that with out insurance there is nothing I can do just accept the loss and insure it next time.
moral of this story is "IF YOU SHIP IT INSURE IT FOR ITS VALUE. They all loss one eventually

I like this kind of thread for the makers as one and all, big and small can chime in. Plus to the makers it's not just WHAT but HOW that's interesting. I have a table, tenatively at least, in a small regional show locally in August and am trying to get a couple more larger pieces finished for that. I did the rough grind on a large (aprox. 10 inch blade) "bowie/rifle knife" last night that I had forged and annealed a couple of days previously. Utilizing my ho'made 2HP horizotal platen 2 x 72 grinder. I need to clean it up to a finer grit longways, and detail the spine and tang to get it ready for HT. got a great piece old antler crown for the handle. forged and folded/welded up a billet of Wrought Iron for the guard to be; going for a S curve ha'penny double quillion. I intend to give the guard a high polish and a light etch to bring out the texture a little. Also intend to add a ferrule to the stag, but havent decided what to use for that. Hmm, may weld up some wrought iron and hi carbon for a candy strip pattern weld for that. Gee, its sounding better already!
