View Full Version : Knives and Guns!
Terrill Hoffman 07-01-2001, 05:48 PM Just a simple little survey. I'm trying to find out how many of our knife nuts are also gun nuts. I think that the shooters are some of the biggest actual users of knives. So guys, when your doing your gun thing, what type of knife do you use?
Don Cowles 07-02-2001, 04:57 AM Although I am not a hunter, as a former cop I do have an abiding interest in all sorts of weaponry. I have a rifle, a shotgun, and 3 handguns, all of which see some handling and fondling, but not much use.
On the other hand, I always have a knife with me, and it will see use many times in the course of the average day.
Gary Mulkey 07-02-2001, 05:53 AM I can't say that I'm an avid shooter since the only modern weapons that I own are both self-protection pistols (which I hope will never be fired). I am an avid hunter though when squirrel & deer season come around. I keep two smokepoles in the closet, a 36 & a 50 caliber. Not that I have anything against modern weapons, I have owned many. The muzzle loaders just put more challenge in the hunt. I guess that I enjoy the hunt more than the shooting. I have had many a successful hunt and never fired a shot. Sitting around a campfire with friends and a cup of cowboy coffee is something I look forward to every year.

dogman 07-02-2001, 06:40 AM A story in one of the gun mags (American Handgunner?) about the first LDC collection actually got custom knives embedded in my brain. Up to that point, a $30 Spyderco was an expensive knife to me. So for me, guns got me into custom knives. I have been shooting since I was about 8.
ERIC ELSON 07-02-2001, 10:40 AM Well I don't shoot pistols or rifles, Pistols because it is just plain hard to do were I live, Rifles because i was never exposed to them. I am however into archery (the original shooting sport :D ) I shoot a few 3-D tournaments and indoor in the winter. I ALWAYS have a knife on me when I shoot a tournament.A) its good advertising, and B) most 3-D shoots are in the woods a place were its always good to have a knife.
I think Knives and the shooting sports go together, because most that are into the shooting sports hunt and all hunters are knife users...

JerryO13 07-02-2001, 10:47 AM I do think that guns and knives do go hand in hand so to speak. I don't have many guns, I spend much more on knives. Partially I think because of the grief that you are given here in NY about it. I have a long gun that was a gift some years back a Winchester model 70 in .30-06 which I think is pretty much the most all around rifle you can have. It's about all you need here in the northeast, unless you go upstate or to canada for moose. It's not a pre'64 model, but it's very accurate and I don't understand why people say that the pre '64's are so much better, never had a problem with mine no matter what kind of ammo I've used. Also have a pistol, that I use for target shooting, although not as often as I'd like too. A friend of mine has a gun shop in Connectict, He's got this great Kimber custom .45 (officers model) that I've been eyeing for quite some time, got to save my pennies!
ansoknives 07-02-2001, 03:21 PM Well I am not a "gunman" but I do like guns!..We canīt have handguns in DK but I do have and WW2 M1 semi auto and a shotgun. I was brought up with hunting so it is natural for me.
If I was living in the States I probably had more than a few handguns like Glock. I like the designs on those and Beretta alot.
Bob Warner 07-02-2001, 06:48 PM GUNS! GUNS! GUNS!
Have always been into guns. Hunting in Arizona since I was eight. Rifles, pistols and archery. Currently have rifles, pistols and compound bow. Haven't hunted in years due to the people in Texas want to lease their land to you so you can hunt on it. Kinda puts a kink in it for me so I don't go anymore.
I have five acres in the country so I can shoot in my back yard. I have five .22's just because I love them. You can shoot all day for pennies.
A history in law enforcement also played a role in my love of weapons.
Guns, yea, I like guns.
davebolton 07-02-2001, 09:34 PM Wish I had a gun, for know I will have to do with my bow and my knife.
Les Robertson 07-02-2001, 09:59 PM Yes Dog, it was American Handgunner that ran the article on the first and second series of LDC Custom Knives. Although, the guys responsible for that were told by everyone it would never work!
My experience has been that Hard Core gun guys will spend thousands on a firearm, but will get the cheapest knife they can buy.
I have been told be several custom knife makers who attend the Safari Club International Shows that many of the gun buyers there border on insulting when talking to the makers.
They will pick up a $300 hunting knife and offer the maker $75.00.
Just because someone is a Gun guy, doesn't mean they understand anything about knives. The same can be said for a knife guy.
I have found an interesting trend over the last several years. Because of the extra paperwork for gun ownership, many gun guys have traded me their customized hand guns and rifles for custom knives.
Fortunatley, I have a Federal Firearms License (FFL). So I can make this happen very easily.
I will say, a Bob pointed out that we did pick up quite a few Gun Guys from the first LDC article in American Handgunner. Many just bought the whole set.
