This piece of wood came from a Box Elder tree that grows by my shop. Last spring a storm broke a big section of it off and when I was cutting it up I found a lot of good colored wood at the base of one if the stumps, so I cut some of it up in large sections and have been letting it dry for over a year now. I finally got around to cutting up one of the smaller pieces and this is one of the blocks that I got out of it.
now that is adding to the sole authorship of a knife!!!

Beautiful piece of spalted box elder. Remember that spalted wood is softer than normal when you go to work it. I'm anxious to see the final handle out of it.

That is good looking wood.I'd like to know what's in your soil to give the different colors.

Mike,

The red color is from the spalting. Most woods spalt brown or black. Box Elder is one that spalts blood red.

I think box elder is one of, if not the most colorful of all the woods. A good piece will have every thing from tan to crimson and every thing in between. It takes stabilizing very well and makes an outstanding knife handle I LOVE IT WISH I HAD A TRUCK LOAD
