View Full Version : It's Just To Darn HOT!!!!
Mike Conner 07-17-2001, 06:04 PM Went to the shop this afternoon and tried to get some grinding done and finally just gave up. Even with two water coolers and a big fan going it was still 103.7 degrees and I was sweating so bad the it kept puddling in my safety glasses. Finally just gave up and came back inside under the AC. Looks like I will have to resort to after sundown during the week and early mornings on the weekends. I Love TEXAS SUMMERS <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/ohwell.gif ALT=":\">

primos 07-17-2001, 06:31 PM Mike,
I know what you mean. It gets mighty hot in northwest Louisiana too. I still remember my hottest workday around the forge. My wife thought I was nuts and came out to take a picture for posterity. That pic is still on my home page.

This was that summer (a couple of years ago?) we had that horrible record-long stretch of rainless days, with temperatures at 100 degrees and above. I forget what the actual temperature was, but it seems like I do recall them saying on the news that with the heat index it was 113 degrees.
If you look closely at the tee-shirt I'm wearing, you can see that it is completely soaking wet and is sticking to my skin in several places. You can even see the blue jeans showing though the wet cotton. A guy has to really have the desire to hammer some hot steel on a day like that. :)
viper5192 07-17-2001, 06:45 PM Like that here in Arizona, but worse! Here you have too always carry and drink water, else you can die! The heat here you don't sweat, well you do, just it evaporates off your skin so fast seems like you don't sweat! So you can seriously dehydrate and not even be aware of it.
Shadowenterprise 07-17-2001, 07:14 PM It is a wee bit humid here :)
Mike Sader 07-17-2001, 07:39 PM Hey guys, Just finished forging up a little damascus, still 103 out here in west Texas, humidity is up but only bout 30%,only 2-3 times the normal here,Terry,I've been wringin wet all day here, one of these days I'm gonna get out to Ole Shreveport and look ya up,I grad. from Parkway High in "75",and my parents live in Carthage Tex. bout 60 mi. from you.Anyways just thought I'd throw my 2c in. primos 07-17-2001, 08:18 PM Come on over Mike. You're welcome any time.
I graduated from Fair Park in "72", then did a brief stint at Kilgore Junior College in Kilgore, Texas. Made a few friends from Carthage while over there -- been there many a time.

Just about 71 or 72 degrees here today... partly cloudy... breezy... Great day to forge in my underground, insulated, cool studio. :p I love Vermont!
Of course, when there is four feet of snow outside and I either freeze or burn, well, it -still- isn't 103! Sure is dark all day though...
Born in New Mexico, lived in Virginia, think I'll keep moving North along with the global warming. ;)
Mike Conner 07-18-2001, 06:22 AM 71 or 72  It's hotter than that in my shop even in the winter. The 103.7 was actual temp in the shop which is in the shade of some lagre Oak and Box Elder trees. The weather man said that the heat indices was around 113. The scary part is that before summer is over here the actual temp will likely be 113. Was last year :smokin:
But I wouldn't live anywhere else, guess you learn to tolerate the heat, but I never learned to like it.
I have another large water cooler that I need to rebuild and maybe that will help.
I'll shut up now and get back to work, just had to vent a little. :)
viper5192 07-18-2001, 09:00 AM C'mon guys! Come out to the desert where it's NICE and hot, THEN crank up the forges! Can you say . . dead in 5 minutes ;-) It's 8 am here and I am already sweating, indoors in an airconditioned apartment!
m l williams 07-18-2001, 11:31 AM Folks, it's not desire, it's all those brain cells you lost as a teenger. Anybody who comes to my shop in the summer has to wear his sign, cause if you are out there you just ain't to bright. 96 deg. 80% humidity
Mike Conner 07-18-2001, 09:14 PM Cooled off some today, only 99 when I got to the shop and it had cooled down to a pleasent 91 by the time I quit around 8:00 pm. I worked on my first folder project some more this afternoon instead of grinding and probably spent more time scratching my head than actually working so that made a difference too. Maybe if I hadn't lost so many of those brain cells back when I was a teenager, I wouldn't have to spend so much time scratching my head now

Gary Mulkey 07-20-2001, 08:46 AM Maybe my endurance isn't what it used to be but I've only produced about half of what I normally do this week. It's just hard to get much accomplished when you spend half of the time wiping sweat from your eyes. More than once I've given up and called it a day after I started having to redo mistakes that I don't normally make. I'm looking forward to doing a show this weekend and being in the AC for a couple of days.
If it's this hot here in the Ozarks I really feel for you that live in the deep south. Come on autumn!
