Hi everyone:
My name is RJ Martin, I'm a full-time custom knifemaker, and I'm excited to be moderating this forum. Thanks, Alex!
I've been heat treating my own blades for quite a while now, and, for me it's still the most satisfying part of knifemaking. I actually went into Materials Engineering because I found heat treatment so interesting.
Over the years, I have heat treated the following steels:
01
A2
D2
M2
440C
ATS34
154CM
BG42
CPMS60V, CPMS90V
CPM3V
CPMS30V
So, you can see that most of my experience runs towards air hardening steels. I'm hoping that the forgers out there can jump in on the carbon steel questions!
I'd like this forum to be become a great resource for all aspects of knife related heat treating-including recipes, techniques, sources for materials and supplies, as well as Q and A. I don't claim to have all the answers, but, I'll share what I know and enlist help from others when I don't know an answer.
OK, let's get going......
