Do makers carry their own work? Customs by another maker? Production knives?

personally I carry a new test knife of my own every hunting season...good tests! and peace of mind knowing that the new technique is working well, and holding up to your standards!

I carry my own work. Day to day I carry a mosaic EBK II with black jig bone slabs, and a Progression II folder with black G-10 and 52100. I believe that a maker should carry and use his own work. How else can he or she honestly tell a potential customer that their product holds up? I also, like Ron, create a new hunter each year to test (read abuse), and see how things are holding up. This year the blade will be of a new steel that I'm learning (and being impressed by), SUJ-2. Basically it's the same as 52100, but produced via vaccum melt, which makes it extremely clean to work, and seems to help greatly in the heat treatment.

I carry one of my own knives, too, and I think it is important for any serious maker to do so. It is the "field trial" that must come after design and construction. It is the only way I know of that I can honestly say to my customers, "This knife will do what you want it to do."

I carry a Spyderco Terzuola ealy design because I canīt carry fixed blades in public. However I use my own blades all the time at home, mostly when sheathmaking and working in the shop. However I am designing some folders I wanna make and carry before I send them out there.

I carry daily a little pearl handled IXL folder and most days I carry one of my lock backs. I make several hunters a year to carry and several large camp knives to play with each year in the field. I also carry a Don Broughton knife and a Clyde Fischer knife when in the field because I liked them two people, both deceased, and like using the knife for a bit to remember them. I also have a damascus knife by Mike Williams that is too purty to use so I just look at it.

I carry the second folder I ever made. My dad has my first one and never carried it. Both are sort of trapper styles  . Mine has been abused and used as a hammer, screwdriver and just about everything that it is not suppose to be used for. But it still cuts. I don't show it much without qualifying that it was the second knife I ever made so not to good.

Also carry Case knives some - Trappers of course. :)

I started collecting knives a lot earlier than knifemaking. Thus i have about 150 knives, both production and custom, at home. Plus about 20 to 40 knives i made. And what i carry depends on my daily gusto and what i am going to do that day, ranging from small Laguioles to big self-made wootz blades.
