Here is an interesting website I'm sure some of you know about, the Ancient Metallurgy Research Group at the Uniniversity of Bradford in the UK:

http://www.bradford.ac.uk/acad/archsci/depart/resgrp/amrg/amrginfo.htm

Some VERY interesting information including a link to a Archeology/Metallurgy e-mail forum that is known to at least one person we know since I saw several replies by Thomas Powers
(BogIron) there!

And check out this research on early Saxon steel production linked to the site:

Those sites are good ones... I especially like the Saxon liquid steel article. Hopefully this Summer I'll get to smelting with that technique.

That's too cool Jon, good luck this summer! It's something I'd like to do sometime also. Too many projects though! I'll be happy to get my DFogg style upright forge running and build a small gas fired crucible furnace. I'll be lucky to only get one of those projects accomplished!

Have you seen this thread at Primal Fires? Thomas Powers describes in pretty good detail how he has built short stack bloomeries made from cob.
