It has been a little quiet here so I thought I would add something new. This one features something new that I tried.I inlayed a piece of turquoise to match the knife handle. The knife is 1095 etched, with brass, turquoise, Axis deer, and Impala.Hope you like it.Dave:D

My compliments, Sir :) It's late here in Seattle, grandson and great-grandmother are both off to bed, and Marie and I were just looking thru the new posts when yours came up. Now, she's no knife nut, but she does know what she likes, and this one gets her 100% approval !
Of course living just a few miles from the Cripple Creek mines we see alot of nice turquoise, but rarely as nicely displayed as you've done here. Bottom pic should be a candidate for next years Calendar Cover, not to mention Knives '05.

Thanks my friends, I hope you two are enjoying your trip.I know it rains alot up there, but what's a little water to a Navy man:D .This sheath was one of those ideas that come to you in the middle of the night and you just gotta try or you will kick yourself for not giving in.A little different for me but I like it.
Linda got a chuckle about planning the next calender since she just got done with one.
Best wishes to you ,Marie and the rest of the clan.Happy New Year and please be safe.Dave:D

Dave, my friend--I really like the way you inlaid the cabochon and particularly where you inlaid it in the cuff wrap. That beats a concho hands down! Did you chamfer the interior of the mounting hole or is the cabochon lipped? Can you imagine using petrified or agatized wood or a large tiger eye as the stone? Is the stone backed by another layer of leather or is the sheath body adequate to secure it in place? I agree with Mike's assessment of an outstanding, artistically fashioned piece of work. Way to go, my friend--- Sandy

Sandy my friend, thank you. This one was new to me and I must have played with half a dozen different methods. One was putting a lip on the turquoise but with having to relieve the inside of the cuff it just proved to be a bear to get right. The method I chose was to insert the knife fully into the sheath and grind the back side of the turquoise to match the sheath contour at that point.I then cut the hole in the cuff a little smaller than the piece.I used superglue to attach the turquoise to the main body. Not knowing how well this would hold, I tried removing it but it was there for keeps.I then attached and glued the cuff stretching it over the piece.I cut the cuff to size and started stitching. It may not be the preferred method but it works. If you or anyone else has a better method I am all ears as even this way wasn't fun to get right.
I will say that it was fun trying some new things.I needed a break from the standard stuff.Take care,Dave:)
