Bob Lum Chinese Folder

I haven't had it to long, just got it before New Years, but I'm really enjoying my latest acquisition. Fit and Finish are impressive and this knife is a joy to handle and use. Although I haven't managed to do to much yet. At one point in time I realized that I did not have many using custom folders, so I went on a quest to add some to my rotation of knives. This knife follows what I consider to be a great formula for working knives. First off it's big and second very flat. I find that a flat knife rides well in the pocket and it's flatness makes you forget how large it actually is. For a user of course I don't want to many frills so this is a pretty plain jane version of what Bob does. He can make this knife with all sorts of options. I went with plain Titanium slabs and a titanium clip. The blade is the tried and true ATS-34.

From my understanding this is a traditional blade shape that Bob has taken and crafted into folder form. He makes 3 sizes of which this is the largest. The blade is a little longer than 3 1/2" from tip to end of edge in a straight line (I don't count the curve as part of the distance) over all length is 8 3/4". The long curved handle gives you a good solid grip and you can choke up or slide back depending on what your cutting.

You may have noticed the Spydie Hole opening in the blade. Yes, this is the custom version of what Spyderco is producing. They are making the medium size.

I may chime in some more after I've had it a while, for now I give it an enthusiastic 2 thumbs up! :) I LIKE IT!

Jerry,

We're coming around the bend on custom forum headers. I'd like to get your ideas on what you would like in here.

Also, should we come up with a CKD icon rating system? I'd like to make up a little icon that we could use like Siskel and Ebert to use on these types of reviews and for lambasting each others jokes and stories.

What do you think?

Alex

Not quite sure, it's kind of subjective. I mean do we do a 1-10 system or 1-5 or thumbs up or thumbs down. Are we rating the knife, the maker, the review or the reviewer?

as for a header I like clean simple lines not to complicated a font but not a simplex or times roman either. Maybe Avant or Aldine401
with some kind of custom knife in the background, maybe a way to rotate the background so theres a different knife every month or so.

Understood ... I'm really not into ratings, either.

I'll work you up a header and have it where you can pick the rotation for each month. That should be pretty cool and a nice way to expose some of this awesome work.

Jens,

It's too new to me yet and I very rarely trade or sell customs. This particular knife is so simple, it really sings to my aesthetics. Simple knives are very difficult to pull off, because everything has to be perfect. It's why I like your stuff so much too. Very clean lines. you dress it up with materials and such. Don Cowles & Jerry Hossum's stuff is very much like that also. It's so simple its elegant.

By the way I've gotten many good comments on the two I got from you. When I showed them to the family I finally got my Mom to say that with those two knives (the Damasheep & Damaclaw) she understands why I collect knives. The users I pick up she doesn't understand. How could you spend $400, $500, $600 on a knife your going to beat up!
