View Full Version : question on using file for blade

Ok, I've heard of using a file as the blade, and I've heard of using a file to do the profileing, shaping, etc. What are the effects of using a file to do the filing on a file (which I intend to turn into a blade)? Will this ruin the file (which I'm using to do the filing with)?

penguin, you will need to anneal (soften) the file before you can shape it, or yes, you will ruin your file(s). Some files are only case hardened and will not make good blades. Nicholson files though, are made from 1095 and will make very good knives.

To soften, you need to heat the file up until it is no longer attracted to a magnet, around 1,400 - 1,500F and place it in some type of medium so that it can cool very slowly. Vermiculite, sand or wood ash are the preferred cooling mediums. The hot steel should be completely covered with whatever medium you choose.

Thanks, that makes more sense.
