what is the diff. between o1-1, o1-2 etc also is this a good knife steel that will be some what easy for a newbie to ht? thx

I never heard of O1-2 but it should mean that there is some slight difference in chemical make up of the steel, probably nothing significant to us. The heat treat ought to be the same as all the other carbon steels.

This is a perfect example of a situation where you should just buy some and try it if you want to know how it performs. That's what knifemakers do.

All the carbon steels that are sold my the knifemaking supply houses are good for making blades (naturally!) and can be heat treated by beginners. The best way to learn is by doing. Buy one of those steels - any steel - and start making a knife!
