what do you guys think about heating and quenching a blade 3 times overkill or no?:evil

Triple temper,Yes.
Triple quench,NO.

Logan, It depends on the steel. Some steels respond well to the 3+3 process and some, like stainless, do not.

with stainless should i do either 3 times or just once?

On stainless and tool steels like D2 you best harden (quench) once and temper 2 or three times because the alloys need the triple two-hour cycle to get full transformation of the retained austenite to martensite. These alloys need perfect atmosphere and temperature control so are best left to pro's who do it for a nominal fee.
look f.e. in the "Performance Blades" where several threads go about it like "tempering D2".and several others.
