I've seen some beautiful designs for folder mechanisms in various knife publications.

Is there a good book covering the various designs?

Thanks,

Ken.

I don't know of a single book that covers all the popular styles. Here is a list of books that will get the job done:

How To Make Folding Knives by Barney & Loveless covers lock back and slip joint

The Tactical Folding Knife by Terzuola covers liner locks

How to Make Multi-Blade Folding Knives by Shadley & Davis covers multi-blade slip joints

These books are available on my website at www.rayrogers.com/books.htm

I've never seen or heard of a book on auto mechanisms ....

welcome to ckd, ken. this may help:
This publication tells you everything you need to know: types of switchblades, their operating mechanisms, how to use a switchblade, butterfly, and gravity knife (http://store.yahoo.com/spytechagency/11908.html)

Thanks very much!

I'll likely pick up some of these books, even the one on switchblades - although switchblades, butterfly and gravity knives are all illegal here in Canada ( as well as anything a person could use to defend themselves... I think sticks are illegal now too...)

I'm trying to acquire the skills I need for making Damascus right now. My goal is to make various Damascus folders - my idea of the prettiest knife.
