My dad just gave me a large Bowie Knife for my birthday. He told me that it was a George Hale knife. According to him, George was a famous knife and musket craftsmen. Could "George" actually be Lloyd? This knife is very large and heavy. At first, I thought it was Pakistani. Then, I realized the turquoises and buffalo(?) teeth were genuine. Also the leather scabbard was of excellent quality and I believe the best component of the knife. I am not a metallurgist but I believe this highly polished blade to be of excellent quality. Last, the handle is engraved in cursive writing with the name HALE. So what do you think?

Welcome! I just did a Google search, and I didn't see any HALE knives with script logos.

Nonetheless, if this IS a LLOYD HALE piece, then you have got yourself quite a valuable piece. There were no other Hale's mentioned on the AG Russell's website 'makers by alphabet'.

Picture??? Send me one if you don't know how to post.

A picture would definitely be helpful. I have all the Knives Annuals, so I am sure one of them has a pic where I could match the trademark.

Lloyd Hale's mark was his last name all in capitals running parallel to the back of the blade, near the guard. I also do not recall reading that he was a maker of muskets. If you can post a picture it would be helpful.

Hale's mark was in every case I've seen (lots) block letters HALE. Also, I wouldn't expect a Lloyd Hale knife to be particularly "heavy", which suggests to me off-balance. But Hale was pretty renouned for large bowies. I'd love to see a pic!
