I'd like to take a moment to offer prayers of condolences for the families of the crew of the Shuttle Columbia.

Very sad.

It was sad to watch. My son Kevin and I were watching it go across the sky, all of a sudden there was more than one vapor trail. We did not realize what happened until we heard it on the news but we actually saw it happen.

Sad thing anytime anyone looses their lives.

Sorry to ressurect an old thread, but the final report from the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB) was released yesterday. It has some pretty interesting things in it. For one, it criticizes NASA for not promoting a national vision for space exploration. It also criticizes NASA (and indirectly, Congress) for the failure to promote further development in space vehicles. Turns out that after the successful launch of the first shuttle (the Columbia, by the way) Congress quit funding any space vehicle development. The CAIB is promoting the development of a replacement for the shuttles, to be in operation as early as 2010.

Maybe this will shake up NASA and those in congress who control the purse strings.

What we really need is something akin to President Kennedy's vision for reaching the moon "before the decade (the 60's) is out". Maybe we need President Bush to come before the American People and declare that we will send an American to Mars "before the decade is out". What a vision, and what a way to renew public interest in space exploration.

If you want to read the report from the CAIB, I have it in two different forms available for download. The first is the whole report. The second is the report in three parts.

Here are the links:
