This is one of several projects with knifemaker, Alex Daniels.

The inspiration for this knife is featured in the "Antique Bowie Knife Book" on pgs. 358-359.

The original blade is marked "N.Y." on the tang.
The horn handle on the antique knife is checkered on all sides.
13 1/2 inches long with a 8 1/4 inch blade.
The engraving pattern on the repro is as close to the original design as was practical.

Other photos posted in the
Sheath Gallery and the Fine Embellishment Forum.

Very cool project and very cool photograph.

It's really nice to see the inspiration and the results. It must be an interesting excercise in skill to copy the engraving thus.

As a side note: I saw the pic in Fine Embellishment with the throat and chape unattached. Aha! I now have a better plan for my chapes. Thanks! ;)

Thanks Jon,

The first picture I had to work from was a scanned image.
Fortunately a friend loaned me his copy of the Antique Bowie book...then I had a better look at the layout of the design.
It's by no means an exact copy but I think the period "look" is there.

It would be nice to have all of the components together for a complete knife photo.
As it stands, this is what I usually receive...parts and a picture!...... ;)

That is a very cool project, and the pictures in the Sheath Gallery are wonderful as well. I love that period of history, and love the artifacts that have survived from then. I'm also a WWII buff. That's a fine knife and will greatly add to someone's collection.
