Wire Hilt Main Gauche 12
This dagger is styled after a German wire-hilt off-hand weapon from the 16th century. As a result of improving technology in carbon steel manufacture, Renaissance swordsmen could use lighter, narrower swords (rapiers). These could be handled with one hand, unlike the heavy hand-and-a half and two-handed long swords of the medieval period. Holdin the sword in one hand freed up the other and allowed them to use it for defensive purposes, like carrying a small shield, buckler, cape, or hat, or a secondary offensive weapon like a second sword, or a dagger like this. These off-hand weapons are commonly called Main Gauche, French for left hand, as they were usually held with the left, while the swords were held in the right. |
