Gary was preparing to start making
knives, a near life long desire. After attending a “hammer
in” the question occurred to him, “Could composite
material be made with colors and patterns that would mimic
damascus steel?” One experiment later, he discovered
that the answer was “Yes”. He also noticed
that apparently no one was making true “Custom”
composite materials for knife handles.
After
approximately 1 year of part time experimentation Gary
began offering fabric reinforced composite handle material
under the trade name Fibermascus to custom knife makers.
The company Pattern Composites was formed in early 2003.
Most natural fibers as well as some synthetic can be
used in the making of Fibermascus in almost any imaginable
color. Flat laminates, as well as many damascus patterns
such as ladder/fiddleback, pool and eye, and rag/random
are possible.
Fibermascus is not a mass produced product.
Each Billet is hand made.
Custom pen turners have begun to use it and custom handgun
grips are also a possibility.
Silver and gold are refined in the fire (steel too)
but God refines men’s (knifemaker’s) hearts.
