My
interest in knives go back about as far as I can remember.
My first knife was given to me by my father somewhere
around the age of six. It was a small single blade folder,
and to this day I remember the thrill and fascination
which it provided me.
Time
marches along and some thirty-three years later fate
provided me an opportunity on my honeymoon eight years
ago. I met custom knife maker and then journey-smith
in the American Bladesmith Society, Wally Hayes. A friendship
developed and an awareness of the world of knives was
brought to the forefront of my attention. Wally lived
in Canada, and I lived in the USA. After being exposed
to Wally and other custom makers work, I knew it was
something I had to do. I called Wally, in Canada, expressed
to him my intent to try my hand at knife making. He
told me he would help me get started by sending some
basic instructions. Eagerly, I awaited for the information
he was sending. Finally the letter arrived. On a single
sheet of 8 x 10 paper were some basic steps outlining
the process. Real basic, but enough to get started and
ask questions. Two and half years later, several books,
videos, seminars and courses, I'm living my dream! Wally
is now of course a Mastersmith, and has been my chief
mentor and teacher. To that I'm grateful.
I currently am a stock removal maker. Dependent upon
the knives application, and or customer's preference,
I grind carbon steels and or varieties of stainless
steels. My carbon steel knives are differently heat-treated,
to offer a tough blade with great edge holding capabilities.
Stainless steel blades are professionally heat-treated,
and when applicable, receive a cryogenic quench treatment
to obtain the maximum benefits of the steel. I am a
part time maker, as I also have a day job as an Aerospace
Engineer. I am also a member of the North Carolina Knife
Makers Guild.
My goal as a knife maker is to create both a useful,
functional, and aesthetically pleasing knife. I want
my customers to be as proud owning the piece as I am
in creating it.
