I enjoy hunting small game and have a passion for hunting
birds over German Shorthaired Pointers, which I have
been breeding for several years. I am President of the
German shorthaired Pointer Club in my State of Victoria
and also a licensed Championship Field Trial Judge.
I was employed by our State Government as a photogrammetrist
for over 35 years. This experience taught me to analyze
jobs into separate tasks and gave me an eye for details.
Fortunately, my job was overtaken by technology and
I retired in 1994. Since then, I have been making knives
full-time.
I started making knives in 1987, initially fixed blade
hunters using the stock removal method, but found after
a while that I needed further stimulation and progressed
into making folders. About this time, I became interested
in Damascus and started making my own in 1990. Today,
I endeavor to combine all these facets into all of
my knives. I have tried my hand at engraving, but soon
discovered that, in order to become any good in this
field, I would have to spend an enormous amount of
time in practicing and that meant time away from knifemaking.
I also occasionally make my own mokume and have produced
several knives using this material.
I am a member of the Australian Knifemakers Guild
of which I was Vice-president for 6 years, and a member
of the Victorian Blacksmiths Association since 1990.
I have been fortunate enough to gain several awards
at both the Australian Guild Show and at several other
knife shows held in Australia.
I am not a prolific maker and make mainly Lockback
folding knives, although I do make a certain percentage
of straight blade hunters. I make one knife at a time,
as that way can guarantee the quality of each individual
knife. No knife leaves my shop unless I am totally
satisfied with the end product!
I do my own heat treating as that way I have total
control over the hardness I require for each individual
knife. The steels I use include 440C, ATS34, 52100,
stainless damascus and of course my own damascus, I
offer both hollow and flat grinding to my customers,
although I recommend hollow grinding for most applications.
Each knife that leaves my shop has a unique serial
number, and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity
as my personal guarantee to the quality of the finished
product.
